Four area American heroes were given a trip of honor to visit the National World War II Memorial in Washington.

The Collierville-based Forever Young Senior Wish Organization took Jim Wales of Germantown and Tom Dumser, Milton Mann and Middleton B. Wingfield, all of Collierville, on the trip.

Along with 27 other World War II vets, the men toured the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Wall, Arlington Cemetery, the Smithsonian and the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps Memorials.

Wearing World War II era photographs of themselves, the group received a lot of attention. One passerby said, "Wow, I would have dated you. What are you doing tonight?"

The veterans were given hugs, salutes, kisses and handshakes for their service to their country.

Wales, 84, flew 35 missions on a B-24 Liberator as a nose gunner in the European Theater. He was in the 8th Air Force, 453 Bomb Group. His commander was actor Jimmy Stewart.

Wingfield, 92, served in the Navy as a hospital corpsman at Midway and Hawaii in the Pacific Theater. He also served aboard the USS Ash.

Mann, 88, was an Army Air Corps pilot. He served from 1942-1946 and flew the B-17, B-24, B-29 and three different trainers.

"The World War II trip to Washington, D.C., was a walk back into history, and the greetings we received were very humbling," Milton said.

Dumser, 85, an aircraft gunner in the Navy dive bombers and torpedo bombers, served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He served aboard the USS Santee and is a Purple Heart recipient.

Forever Young will be taking another trip next spring. Anyone interested in sponsoring a veteran should call 299-7516 or visit foreveryoungseniorwish.org.

Nell Wales is married to Jim Wales.
