| Viewpoints: Liberal elites still don't get the tea party Posted: 14 Jan 2011 08:33 PM PST In the darkest moments of a national tragedy like we witnessed in Arizona last weekend, there are always some American heroes to make us proud. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of scoundrels who operate from the darkest corners of the American experience. The villains include the liberal pundits and media elites who falsely tried to paint blame on conservatives and tea party activists for the carnage of an obvious madman. When our Tea Party Express bus tour is traveling the country, we take time at every rally to recognize our military veterans in the audience and pay homage to the men and women serving in harm's way in distant lands. Like our men and women of the military, we had numerous heroes save lives in Tucson at their own peril. The young congressional intern, David Hernandez, only five days on the job, quickly helped stop the bleeding and tended to wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords until medical help could arrive. No doubt he saved her life. A woman, Patricia Maisch, didn't run but took after the gunman and prevented him from reloading his weapon. Roger Salzgeber and Bill Badger wrestled him to the ground, while a shopper who walked by decided to help by holding down the gunman's legs as he struggled to return to his carnage. There were too many people, however, who were not so noble. The liberal sheriff in Tucson, Clarence Dupnik, a sorry excuse for a law enforcement officer, was on the air blaming talk radio and "the hard right" for the shootings, ignoring his own failure for not apprehending the gunman when he was displaying irrational and threatening behavior in the past. TV host Chris Matthews joined in, naming conservative radio hosts Mark Levin and Michael Savage as having encouraged violence with their "ugly talk." No one mentioned then-Sen. Barack Obama's famous statement, "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun" or that the liberal Daily Kos had put a bull's-eye on Congresswoman Giffords because they felt she was too conservative. With absolutely zero evidence, liberal journalists and bloggers tried to use this violent act as an opportunity to defame and attempt to silence the millions of Americans who are part of the tea party. When it appeared the deranged gunman was more likely a leftist anarchist, the attacks changed to blaming conservative rhetoric for fueling murderous rampages. How ridiculous. In fact, The Bee has gone as far as to accuse the tea party of exploiting the tragedy in Arizona because we chose to defend ourselves against scurrilous charges ("Tea party joins fray in exploiting Tucson shooting"; editorial, Jan. 12). The media think they can attack us and then dictate whether we are allowed to defend our members. The Bee, like countless other liberal outlets, also keeps repeating the same old slander against the tea party movement by claiming that it is full of nutty people and excessive rhetoric. They cite isolated incidents of individuals carrying a legal firearm out of several million people who attended our rallies. Until the liberal media recognizes the tea party movement as the most potent mainstream political movement in decades, we will continue to see good, earnest, patriotic Americans vilified and attacked. The major thrust of the Tea Party Express is to oppose the continual growth and intrusiveness of the federal government, with the high taxes, onerous government regulations, increasing annual deficits and a skyrocketing national debt. At least 70 percent of Americans have that concern, yet the left continues to call the movement extreme. It is clear these liberal elitists are completely out of touch with Americans. As more people have joined the tea party, the left continues to falsely accuse these patriotic Americans of being AstroTurf, crackpots, racists and nuts. The left has determined that when their smear tactics don't work, just try another smear. That is certainly in clear evidence by the disgusting display of invective leveled against tea party conservatives this week. Liberals everywhere know that the ideas of the tea party are resonating with the American public and we are winning elections, and that scares them. The left, on the other hand, is out of ideas that can win elections. The only proposals they ever have require new government programs, more government bureaucrats, more government spending, more annual deficits and more adding to the outrageously high national debt. That is not an appealing program to offer the American people. The Tea Party Express will not let these false attacks distract us from our mission to return constitutional principles and restore fiscal sanity to America. We will achieve this goal by continuing to use the election process in 2012 with the same level of success we had in 2010. © Copyright The Sacramento Bee. All rights reserved.
