NWCN.com Posted on October 20, 2010 at 8:37 PM Updated today at 8:37 PM MOSCOW, ID. -- A group of students at the University of Idaho put hard work and research into a project to ensure American heroes who served in the Vietnam War are properly honored. Four years ago, History and Contemporary American Experience Professor Dick Wilson noticed there was not a star next to his friend's name on the university's Vietnam War Memorial plaque that hangs in Memorial Gym. The plaque honors more than 200 of Idaho's and the university's Vietnam veterans. A star represents an alumni. "They were left of because some of students were out of state, also some that had not been declared dead, still missing in action, and some that were not considered alumni yet at the university because they went of to war," said Wilson. Wilson talked with a Lieutenant Ken Hunt with the Army ROTC at the University of Idaho, who challenged Wilson's freshman class to find all the university's Vietnam veterans left off the 1972 plaque. The 38 students divided into research committees and worked with then teacher assistant Michael Lorenze on the task. They searched government records, databases -- and eventually found 21 names. It took the student a full academic year to complete their research. Bringing the plaque from idea to reality took four years. The University of Idaho will officially dedicate the plaque November 5th. "I was proud at the time, but since then, have become even more proud," said Wilson.
