The Colony will celebrate Veterans Day this Saturday with the third annual American Heroes: A Salute to Veterans. A days worth of activities are scheduled, including a 5K/10K/1-Mile Fun Run, veterans ceremonies, a car, truck and bike show, family entertainment, live music, a carnival, a 3v3 soccer tournament, and a fireworks finale in the evening.

Bucky Covington will be the headliner act. He was a Season 5 American Idol contestant who is now an up-and-coming contemporary country artist debuting his second album, titled, Im Alright.

American Legion Holley-Riddle Post No. 21 representative Dewey Fambry said the genesis for American Heroes began about five years among members of a now-defunct veterans club.

It was just a couple old guys and one night in the Masonic Lodge we decided to have a parade, which evolved into this, Fambry said. Last year the city got involved and theyre heavily involved this year. Its just a slow evolution but has turned out that everyone in The Colony and every organization has got something to do it.

Mayor Joe McCourry, former commander of the Legion Post, said the event is a small token of appreciation for the service veterans have given to the country.

It starts from the community up. We have a large percentage of veterans in our community. I think in giving back to those who are willing to give all, this is just a small token or our appreciation for the service that they gave, he said. This is small in comparison to what they did and the things they went through. Im glad that our community supports this type of activity. Everyone celebrates Veterans Day, but not to this extent. Its important that some community, our community, fill that void and invite all veterans throughout the Metroplex, North Texas, and Oklahoma, to come and join in this celebration.

Special Events Coordinator Lindsey Stansell said the city is thrilled to partner with the American Legion for the event.

We are looking forward to all of the fun things we have planned including the fantastic band, but most of all we are proud to honor those who have served this country, she said.

The events will be held at The Colony 5-Star Sports Complex at 4100 Blair Oaks Drive, except for the 5K/10K/1-Mile Fun Run activities which will be held at Stewart Creek Park on 3700 Sparks Road.

Residents are advised of road closures associated with Saturday's American Heroes event. Blair Oaks from Arbor Glen to Cougar Alley will be closed from 9:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Memorial Drive will be closed from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. for the fireworks display.
