By Brenton Garen, Beverly Hills Courier

Beverly Hills' first Rose Parade float in more than 20 years won the Mayor's Trophy for the Most Outstanding City Entry — national or international — on New Year's Day at the 122nd Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena.

The Courier was on hand to watch the floats trundle down Colorado Boulevard under blue, crisp skies.

The Beverly Hills float riders included Marine Corps officers and current Beverly Hills Police Officer Lt. Col. Tom West and wife Helen and daughter Blair as well as Lt. Col. Mark Miner.

TV personality Leeza Gibbons, symbolizing the spirit of Beverly Hills, sported what was promised to be a "million dollar wardrobe," replete with a spectacular bauble from one of the world's most prominent Rodeo Drive jewelers, as she rode aboard the float themed "City of Dreams Come True."

Riding at the front of the float were Mayor Jimmy Delshad and City First Lady Lonnie Delshad as the song 90210 Beverly Hills, written by Hal David and Charlie Fox and recorded by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., played over the on-board sound system.

More than 175 Beverly Hills volunteers, the largest number for any Tournament of Roses parade float, dressed the City's Raul Rodriguez-designed elegant entry at Fiesta Parade Floats in Irwindale in the week leading up to the parade.

Among the Beverly Hills cognoscenti championing Beverly Hills' first parade entry in 23 years was the legendary Fred Hayman, the beloved "godfather" of Rodeo Drive and founder of Giorgio, one of the city's early retail stars.

The other three Beverly Hills Tournament of Roses Committee directors were Brian Rosenstein, Robbie Anderson and Courier Publisher Clif Smith.

Since the 122 year old parade's founding, Beverly Hills has participated six times.

This year's parade theme was "Building Dreams, Friendships and Memories."
