| School Matters briefs: Sept. 21 Posted: 20 Sep 2010 09:00 PM PDT Local schools named Blue Ribbon Schools St. Mary's School in Oak Ridge, St. Joseph School in Knoxville and Townsend Elementary School in Townsend were designated as 2010 Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either high performing or have improved student achievement to high levels. The program is part of a larger Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about the best school leadership and teaching practices. The three schools met all of the criteria for a Blue Ribbon high performing school, which means that the achievement of students in the most recent year placed them among the highest performing schools in the nation in reading and mathematics as measured by a standardized national test, officially placing them in the top 10 percent of schools nationwide. Area students collect change for donation More than 28,800 elementary, middle and high school students across Tennessee raised over $48,410 this year by donating their spare change to support Olive Garden's 16th annual Pasta for Pennies program benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Among the top fundraising schools in Tennessee were Northwest Middle School in Knoxville, which collected $4,178, and Cedar Bluff Elementary School in Knoxville, which collected $2,762. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. To learn more, visit www.lls.org or call 800-955-4572. Essay contest for high school students U.S. high school students, grades 9-12, are invited to compete for nearly $115,000 in prize money by participating in the Bill of Rights Institute's fifth annual Being an American essay contest. Specifically, students will be asked to share their thoughts on American citizenship by answering the following question: "What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?" The contest began Sept. 1, and the deadline for submissions is Dec. 1. The top three student winners and their teachers from each of nine geographic regions will be announced at a special Washington, D.C., awards gala in spring 2011, where cash prizes will be awarded. The winning students also will explore the nation's capital, meet contemporary American heroes and national leaders and visit national landmarks. All essays must be submitted by a high school teacher at www.BeingAnAmerican.org, where students and teachers also can get for more information on the contest.
