Benefit: Conroe's Incredible Pizza, located at 230 S. Loop 336 W. in Conroe, will host the Danny Parrot Benefit from 3-9 p.m. today. With a coupon, 15 percent of all front-register sales will be donated to Parrot, who is married with four children, in need of a liver transplant and currently has no medical insurance coverage. He is unable to work because of his medical condition.

All proceeds will go to a benefit account for Parrot at Woodforest Bank. Monetary donations can be made to the "For Benefit of Danny Parrott" account with the account number 1354342238.

Writers in performance: Beth Ann Fennelly, an associate professor at the University of Mississippi, will Thursday speak at the Writers in Performance event at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lone Star College-Montgomery library. William Virgil Davis, winner of the New Criterion Poetry Prize and the Helen C. Smith Memorial Award for Poetry, will speak Oct. 28 and Scott Blackwood, who on the Associated Writing Program's Prize for the Novel and The Texas Institute of Letters Jesse Jones Award for Best fiction, will speak Nov. 18.

Grant: Texas Healthy Habitats Grants of up to $10,000 are now available from Service Learning Texas, with applications due Sep. 30. The grants will involve students in service-learning initiatives to improve or restore the natural environment, made possible with a donation from Encana Oil & Gas (USA), Inc. to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation.

Eligible grant applicants include public schools, open enrollment charter schools and private nonprofit schools in Texas that serve youth in grades 5-12; 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in Texas that work with students in grades 5-12; and state or local agencies in Texas that work with youth in grades 5-12.

Applicants should consult with TPWD staff for assistance in identifying local environmental needs, examining issues and determining resources, and developing a plan. Applicants may apply for up to $10,000. Competitive preference will be given to counties in which Encana operates (Angelina, Denton, Freestone, Hood, Leon, Nacogdoches, Panola, Parker, Robertson, Sabine, Shelby, Tarrant and Wise).

Applicants must also watch a recording of webinar on a the grant, and a link to the recording is posted on the Healthy Habitats page of the Service Learning Texas website.
