Got a pile of DVDs that are collecting dust?

Put them to good use.

Oakland County Commissioner Tim Burns, D-Clawson, is organizing a collection of new and gently used DVDs for veterans who are receiving treatment at veterans' hospitals.

The drive will be during the upcoming Patriot Week, an event founded by a local judge and his daughter to reinvigorate people's appreciation of the American spirit.

"It's really fitting to tie (the drive) with Patriot Week, because these are true American heroes," Burns said of the veterans.

People can drop off DVDs in special collection boxes at the following dates, times and locations:

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 12 at City Park at the intersection of Custer and Elmwood in Clawson.

12:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 11-17 at VFW Post 4037, 2375 E. Maple Road in Troy.

8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 and Sept. 12, and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 13-17 in the lobby of the Troy Police Department, 500 W. Big Beaver Road.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13-17 at Clawson Community Credit Union, 625 N. Main St.

2 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11-17 at the American Legion David E. Cleary Post, 655 S. Main Street in Clawson.

Burns said he's hoping enough DVDs are turned in to fill up a donation box at each of the locations.

"We're not looking for any kids' cartoons or any adult movies," Burns said. "We're looking for action flicks, comedies and dramas that would be of interest to adults."

The DVDs will be sorted before they're given to the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit. If more DVDs are donated than are needed, the remainder will go to other VA facilities across the country.

Burns said while he's not encouraging people to donate kids' movies, if any do come in, they will be given to the Boys and Girls Club or another children's charity.

Patriot Week starts on Sept. 11, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. It ends on Sept. 17, Constitution Day.

Patriot Week was started by Oakland Circuit Judge Michael Warren and his daughter, Leah. A number of schools hold special events throughout the week.
