The city of The Colony is again selling banners to honor veterans this year. The banners will be displayed throughout the community from mid-October through mid-November, to coincide with the Veteran�s Day holiday and the American Heroes festival./File photo

Round-up of events and news briefs from around town, including preparations for Veterans Day, an ABWA Trivia Night and auditions for the next The Colony Playhouse production.

City offering veterans banners - The city of The Colony is again selling banners to honor veterans this year. The banners will be displayed throughout the community from mid-October through mid-November, to coincide with the Veteran�s Day holiday and the American Heroes festival. Any active duty member or veteran of the Armed Forces is eligible to be honored with a banner.

ABWA hosts Trivia Night - The Colony Chapter of the American Business Women�s Association will be hosting a Trivia Night at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at Evergreen at Morningstar, 6245 Morning Star Drive.

This fact-filled night will feature teams of six competing for prizes and glory. Team fee is $90, and includes refreshments. Single entries will be combined to form teams as needed. Deadline for registration is Sept. 10.

Church sponsors blood drive - St. Peter's Episcopal Church is partnering with the Red Cross to host a blood drive for the community as part of the church�s annual fall kick-off festivities.

The blood drive will be on Sunday at the Cascades Event Center, 5909 Stone Creek Dr., immediately following the 10 a.m. service and is open to the public. There will be coffee and cake available to all as well as an array of church programs.

Playhouse auditions - The Colony Playhouse is hosting open auditions for �Velveteen Rabbit� from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Lakeway Baptist Church youth building, 4000 N. Colony Blvd.

Parts are available for up to 20 children ages 8 to 17. No previous acting experience is necessary. Auditions will be from cold reading from the script and some improvisation. Tish Mussey will be directing this production.

Rehearsals will be in the evenings during September and October. Performances are Nov. 5-7 and 12-14.

Special ED PTSA events - The Greater Lewisville Special Education PTSA is hosting its September kick-off �Meeting and Program� on Sept. 16 at the new Purnell Support Center, 136 W. Purnell St., in Lewisville.

The topic will be �Special Ed 101 and ARD 101,� and the presentation will be on understanding the process, what resources are available, and what parents can do to help. Parents of students of all ages, PPCD through high school, are welcome to attend. There will be time for questions after the presentation.

A brief PTSA meeting and refreshments will be at 6 p.m., followed by the presentation from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For information, contact Heather Brogan-Myers at hbroganmyers@yahoo.com or 972-899-2939.

LISD�s Special Education Department will be hosting a FOCUS event on Social Skills from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 30, also at the Purnell Support Center. Social Skill groups for students will be going on during the presentation for parents, and there will also be childcare for siblings. Reservations are required by calling 469-713-5199 by Sept. 28.

SEPTSA is also now offering friendship groups for PPCD, elementary, middle and high school students. They are also taking membership renewals and new members online for the 2010-11 school year. Visit www.lisdseptsa.txpta.org for details.

Author event Saturday - T.L. Wood of The Colony, author of �Eldohr Adventures: Search for the Lost Kingdom,� will be at Half Price Books in McKinney from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday for a book-signing and meet-and-greet with fans of the series.
